The Zabrak made a beckoning motion with his hand as he took up his stance. His weight was on his right leg forward, with his left behind and pointed away, roughly shoulder width apart. His lightsaber was held in his right hand at waist height. He let the blade drop until the tip hovered just a centimeter from the floor, with his left hand open, palm against the back of the lightsaber hilt. His face was calm and his eyes empty.
Nethhakk…the Sleeping Sword…
The Vong Commander leapt forward, swinging the amphistaff downward, but Kahj’s blade swept up in a blinding arc and parried it away at the last moment. Following the momentum of the blade, he pivoted around and swept the blade back downward at the Vong’s neck. The Yuuzahan Vong whipped the amphistaff around behind himself, forming a flexible arc that solidified just before the lightsaber struck, blocking it. He launched his leg backward in a kick to the Zabrak’s midsection, but Kahj was already pivoting away, returning to his curious stance.
For a moment, the Vong commander studied the enigmatic Jedi, then he quickly launched a series of strikes with his amphistaff, switching fluidly between thrusts or cuts with the staff, and lashes with it in its whip form. Kahj parried the blows with short, precise movements, making only minimal counters. When his opponent retreated under counterattack, Kahj followed, but when his opponent advanced, he moved laterally, controlling the field and momentum of the fight.
His opponent was becoming frustrated and Kahj waited for his opening. The Vong Commander pressed the attack again but the deceptive motions of Kahj’s blade worked past his guard. He was forced to leap away at the last moment, the lightsaber cutting a shallow gouge across the chest of his armor. The Zabrak’s foot connected in mid air with a side kick, knocking the warrior back.
The Vong Commander landed and rolled backward, coming up into a crouch. His amphistaff wrapped itself around his arm, freeing both hands. He threw both a “thud bug” and a “blast bug” at the Jedi, quickly charging behind the missiles with the staff again ready. Kahj neutralized the “thud bug” with his lightsaber while simultaneously deflecting the “blast bag” away with the Force. It exploded harmlessly against a near wall as he avoided the Vong’s rush with a sidestep in the opposite direction.
Kahj unexpectedly took the offensive, his simple blade work reversing into complicated patterns that confounded the Commander. Thrusts turned into cuts, which morphed into parries, which slid into thrusts. The elite Vong warrior was canny, however, and adjusted well. He was obviously an experienced warrior, and a dangerous foe. He gave as good as he got, forcing Kahj again on the defensive. With their weapons locked against each other, the Commander took a deep breath and exhaled a noxious cloud of gas at the Zabrak’s face.
The bio-weapon burned his face and eyes with agonizing effectiveness. He stumbled backwards in surprise, the Vong’s amphistaff suddenly whipping out and wrapping around his ankle. He was violently jerked off his feet and his lightsaber clattered on the floor. Kahj blindly twisted away as the staff came down again, spearing the floor where he had just been. Unable to see, the Zabrak rushed into his opponent, grappling with him. No need to see him if you’re touching him.
Kahj rammed his head upward, catching the Commander on the side of the head with his horns. He followed with an elbow across the jaw, and a chop on his arm, knocking the amphistaff from his hand. The Vong grunted with pain as his jaw broke, but it didn’t slow him in the least. The Commander grabbed the Zabrak’s arms and they struggled for a few moments. There was a sudden pain in Kahj’s left calf and he realized the amphistaff had bitten him of its own accord. Like the “crab” armor, the amphistaffs were living technology and capable of limited action of the own. The Jedi knew he was running out of time, as that blow was most likely envenomed…
Summoning all the strength he could, he allowed the Force to flow through him and outward in a great wave, knocking the Commander and the amphistaff away from him. Feeling around himself with the Force, he leapt backwards to where his lightsaber lay and grabbed it, thankful for the temporary distance between himself and the Yuuzhan Vong. His eyes were blinded, and the Vong were like holes in the Force, undetectable through it. He was truly blind.
Taking up his Nethhakk stance again, he calmed his mind and stretched out his senses. He shut out the energy flow of the machinery around him and the sensations from Besk’s desperate battle on the opposite side of the room. He shut out the gruesome feelings from the three dying soldiers nearby. He quieted himself and his surroundings seeking the Void…
And the epiphany came to him. He couldn’t feel the Vong directly through the Force, but he could feel him indirectly through the air and the ground.
Kahj felt the tiny tremors in the floor as the Vong Commander charged him, his victory certain. He felt the minute changes in the air as it gathered in waves before his passage, washing over the Jedi. He heard the faint creak of the "crab" armor and the slight whistle of the amphistaff cleaving through the air. Closer…closer…
The tip of the amphistaff lanced toward him. Time slowed to a crawl. His lightsaber ignited in his right hand, sweeping upward in a short arc. The blade contacted the staff, knocking it away to his right. The Vong Commander’s eyes opened wide as he felt a sudden pressure under his jaw. The barrel of the Zabrak’s blaster pistol pressed there in his left hand. With his attention on the lightsaber, the motion of Kahj's left hand had remained completely unnoticed by him.
"Say hello to your Gods for me..."
Kahj pulled the trigger.
