The incessant ringing of the bell suddenly broke through the melody that Ava was listening to. She sighed a bit and paused the music video she was seeing before she took off her headphones and stood up. Smoothing out the little black dress she was wearing and slipping on her black stilettos, she walked out of the office and greeted the family waiting at the front desk, flashing them a smile.
“Hello Sir. How can I help you?” Ava asked as she moved the mouse over the screen, a list of reserved guests appearing on the screen. Maxwell O'Keefe - an attractive man despite being his mid-40’s - and patriarch of his family, was checking them in early – two days early in fact - but Ava knew this family very well. The O’Keefes had been coming to Ember’s Ski Lodge since Ava was 16 and eventually she taught the entire family how to ski, expect their son who wanted to learn how to snowboard.
As Ava took out the keycards to their rooms and handed them to Maxwell she glanced outside and spotted his son Charlie, hauling their bags out of their car and onto a luggage trolley. He was probably trying to avoid Ava, knowing that even though it was snowing outside, it was still too fine for anybody to ski or snowboard. He knew that Ava wouldn’t schedule lessons so she would be scheduled to work at the front desk, because according to her grandmother, she made an unforgettable first impression.
Charlie and Ava had dated for about 6 weeks when she was 18 and he was 20, but for some reason he was still sore about their breakup, despite it happened five years ago. Of course, they never did talk about breaking up officially. Ava just stopped communicating with him and didn’t see him until he returned the following year with his family. He had avoided seeing her that year as well, which she sure was difficult since she was there when they arrived and left.
Ava had the bad habit of not keeping up the romantic relationships she forged. Ever since she was 14, and people realized how beautiful of a girl she was, the young woman had been dating. She had dated a lot of men since then, and even though many knew how she dated by now she still kept getting offers out to dinner and the movies. She would date the men that asked, maybe schedule a second date if she enjoyed the first date enough and most wanted something casual, knowing full well what she would do.
At least, that’s how it would start.
For some reason every man who wanted something casual soon decided they wanted something more and would eventually tell her those three words she dreaded. As soon as they uttered the words “I love you” they had effectively ended the relationship. Ava had never said it back and even though they would date after those words were said, a week of two later they would claim they hadn’t heard from Ava in a while.
Charlie followed his family with the luggage trolley and sure enough, he didn’t even glance over to the front desk. He was too sensitive and you would think after seeing her date Matthew, Evan, Joe, Kevin and Robert he would get over it, but he still tried to avoid seeing her. Perhaps she would send him a message and tell him to get over it. She wasn’t going anywhere and the only way he would be able to avoid her completely was to stop coming to Embers, which she didn’t see him doing.
Ava moved back into the office and took off her stilettos, relaxing back into the office chair. The next round of guests wasn’t scheduled to arrive for another two hours, and Ava didn’t really have anything to do until they arrived. She put on her ear buds and resumed the video. She was sure she would hear the bell when they rang it and she would get them signed in as she did every year. Winter had begun and Ava really hoped this would really be one to remember.

Revenge is sweet and not fattening.
A brand new, 2017 Ford Escape roared its engine as David climbed the mountain, following behind a fancy Cadillac Escalade with gold trim. It drove at a leisurely pace, but David did not mind as he glanced out the windows, looking at the beautiful mountain that held Embers Ski Lodge. He passed many Pine trees, all of them snow covered, and some Aspen trees as well, groves of them. Many of them had carvings of initials. He spotted one as he drove by that said A + S 2008, along with many others, some with hearts and others with just initials. Some deviant had scared a tree with an obscenity. David laughed as he tapped on the breaks to give the Cadillac some more room ahead of him.
His eyes turned back onto the road more fully as they continued the long, winding road up the mountain. His mind started thinking more about Aspen trees. Aspens typically grow in large clonal colonies, derived from a single seedling, and spread by means of root suckers; the other aspens are actually just large stems from the original tree. David felt like one of those stems have had their roots severed. He couldn't feel the happiness he had felt when he was with Jessi, just a few weeks before. Back when his life made sense, and he had a full future planned with her; an extravagant wedding and a luxurious honeymoon. A few years later, hopefully, a few kids. It would be hectic and hard, but it would be worth it as he would have the best wife in the world by his side. All of that had been shattered in a few texts that confessed her love for his longtime friend, Tom. David shook his head as he recalls how angry he had been, throwing his new iPhone 7 Plus, shattering the screen. When he had finally picked it up he felt as if it was appropriate. His life had just been shattered. And over a text message. Not even in person or a phone call. It was as if the thing he had built with her was a sham. All the 'I love you and cuddles, all of it was a lie and meant nothing David anymore. The phone had still worked, he simply just replied "You are a terrible human being. Also, tell Tom I said goodbye for me." After that, he quickly blocked all but his Family and work contacts. Jessi and David had shared most of the same friends. Those would be gone now, too.
It hadn't been too long after the break up when his Father sent him the website for Embers Ski Lodge, with a simple message saying how he had gone there long ago to find "himself". And so here he was, making his way to it now after a shopping spree to buy all the equipment he would need. After a while he finally made it, taking in the beautiful sight of the lodge. He suddenly felt lighter, as if some burden had been lifted from his shoulders. He checked his phone, and there was no signal. He smiled and nodded, putting it away. Just the way he wanted it. There would be no reason to speak to anyone now.
David waited as he saw their family ahead of him get out. They were very posh looking. One of the sons looked kind of nervous and didn't join them in. Instead, he busied himself with unloading. David laughed and waited for them to leave to their rooms.
As he got out he took a breath of fresh air, the crisp air filling his lungs and revitalizing him. He was two hours ahead of schedule, but David really had nothing better to do. He moved into the office, the bell sound behind him as he made his way to the desk. No one immediately came but David wasn't in a hurry. He waited for a five minutes before he shrugged and ventured around the corner.
That was when he saw her. She was watching a video, which allowed him to stare for a few moments before he noticed her. Long, beautiful brown hair, with two glowing eyes. Her perfect skin fit a round face with a beautiful chin. Her soft lips were resting peacefully as she enjoyed what she was watching. David felt the air come out of him and his knees go weak, and he knew right away- Love at first sight. After a few more moments of gawking David knocked politely on the open door. He nodded to her then made his way back to the counter, a little spring in his step now.
As he waited at the counter, it was as if there was a longing already for him to see her again. She didn't disappoint as she came around again, wearing her stilettos that she had taken off. They made her look even taller and more stunning. David fumbled as he brought out his wallet to get ready for check-in, and tried not to look like a fool. "Checkin for David Cook," he said then offered a smile.

Ava was watching the latest live stream of GT Live when she heard a knock on the door to the office. She turned expecting to see one of her family members, though they rarely returned this early to the lodge. Most of her family was out at the cabins near the lodge, cleaning them and getting them ready for the guests. They checked them several times a year, but they did a more through time closer to the holidays, just to make sure they were up to standards.
Even though Embers was a quite large and luxurious lodge, it usually couldn’t accommodate all the families that visited every year. When it first opened it soon became apparent that they needed more rooms, so her grandfather had cabins built not far from the lodge. Despite being called cabins they were still pretty high quality and were updated with the latest appliances and electronics every few years. This ensured people were still comfortable, even if they decided to stay in rather then enjoy the mountain.
She blinked when she saw a stranger heading back to the counter, having knocked just to get her attention. She sighed to herself as she hadn’t heard the bell like she thought she would and she didn’t like to keep people waiting, which is something she herself hated doing. She slipped on her stilettos and quickly made her way to the counter, nodding to the man there. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting Sir. Welcome to Ember’s Ski Lodge! How may I help you?”
Ava couldn’t help but smile when she got a good look at the man checking in. The man looked to be carved out of marble, with a beautiful face that was framed perfectly by his dark hair, dark eyes, and light stubble that complimented his features. He had a bronzed skin complexion which told her that a place like Vail wasn’t what he was used to, which only made Ava question why he was there. She was mesmerized by him, and almost didn’t catch his name when he checked in.
She glanced over the lists of reserved guests as she tried to register what he said and nodded as she saw his name. “David Cook? Let me see if your room is ready.” Ava knew it was, but she had to admit that she was curious to know if he had any relatives coming. She pulled up his file and gave a small smile when she saw he was alone, with no relatives or girlfriends coming to join him. Doing a little rearranging, she printed out a keycard, wrote the wi-fi password on the back, and handed it to David.
“OK Mr. Cook. Your room is 2B on the second floor of the lodge. I also took the liberty of upgrading your package free of charge, which includes a few more perks and entitles you to free skiing or snowboarding lessons. I’m the instructor for both, and believe me you’ll want to learn one of those while you’re here.” She paused and pushed her brown hair behind her. “Do you need some help with your bags? Your room is actually right next to mine so I can take you there if you like.”
She had purposely moved David’s room to be right next to hers, moving Mr. Lexington to David’s room. The rooms at the lodge were all the same, but Ava felt she’d prefer to see David than Mr. Lexington most mornings. Mr. Lexington tended to be quite grabby with her, and well, David could prove to be a pleasant distraction. They were always a plus during the holidays, and for many more reasons that they were nice to look at.

David smiled as he watched her, barely aware of her words until she mentioned that his room was next to hers. He smiled and suppressed a chuckle at his luck. He was going to have the best room in the lodge. "I would love some help to my room, thank you!" he said, offering her one of his rolling suitcases. He waited for her to finish and then followed her, keeping a close eye on her bottom, and when they reached the room, he waited for her to open it and lead him inside. He set down his bags on the bed and then turned to her. "It was really nice meeting you... I hope you can teach me something good on the slopes? I'm kind of a beginner." he laughed, then reached out and brushed her hand.
It was going to be a great time here if he could get closer to her, and he already felt himself falling for her.

Ava nodded when David requested her help, propping up a sign saying she would return momentarily and stepped out from behind the desk. She wasnít sure why he was there, but gauging by the size and the weight of his suitcase, it seemed that David Cook planned to stay with them for the entire holiday season, maybe even longer if his job didnít need him to return right away after he new year.
She gave him another smile as she lead him to room while she took his suitcase, wondering why he was there. People came to Embers for many reasons, and even though Vail was famous for its slopes, he knew people often went for more than that. Most came to get away from it all, for despite having an internet connection phones usually didnít get the best reception this high up in the mountains. She didnít ask as she lead him there though, for even though Ava was curious it wasnít in good taste to be too hasty.
As she walked ahead of him she spotted him checking her out from a hallway mirror and decided to bait him by adding a little sway to her hips. She just wanted to make sure David was checking out her body, and not her dress. She didnít think he swung for the other team, but she didnít want to assume anything. However, the way he reacted when she added that little something confirmed that he was more interested in the woman than what she was wearing.
As Ava finally got to his room, she stepped inside with him and let him take it in before she dropped off his suitcase in the bedroom. All the rooms in the Lodge were more akin to suites in expensive hotels. All of them had a small kitchen with new appliances - a living room that held a fireplace, a large flatscreen, a couch and a recliner - a bedroom that had a king size bed, a chest, and large walk-in closet and a bathroom that held a tub, a shower, a sink, a toilet and even a bidet.
Davidís room had an impressive view of the mountain, a view that led many people who stayed in his room out to the balcony. The balcony was right next to hers and Ava could remember many times when she would spend several nights just talking to the guest next door from her balcony. Ava set his suitcase next to the closet as he set his bags to his bed and turned to speak to her, reaching out to take her hand.
Ava smiled lightly and accepted it and leaned closer into David. It would be so simple, so easy, to kiss him right then and there. He was interested, she was sure, and so was she and getting that awkwardness out of the way, would make thing easier. However, Ava wasnít sure if she could trust herself with being JUST that intimate - at least not yet. She grabbed the brochure on the desk next to him and backed away before either of them could make a move.
ďYouíll find all the information about the lessons in here, and I promise not to start you off on anything you canít handle,Ē Ava told him as she handed him the brochure. ďAlso, you can request for private lessons if youíd prefer me to be more hands on.Ē Ava let go of Davidís hand and start to make her way out of his room, brushing her hair behind her once again and turned to him, but was unsure what to say.
She glanced around his room and recovered quickly, nodding to him. ďI have to go back to the front desk, but Iíll have some champagne sent up to your room. We also serve a buffet-style breakfast and dinner everyday at the ballroom downstairs, at 8 AM and 7 PM respectively. Iím usually there, and Iíll let you know where you can get some lunch during the day if you go.Ē
Ava made her way out the room and moved downstairs quickly, before she overstayed her welcome in Davidís room. She had gotten in trouble before for doing something along the same lines in the past, and even though it did allow some previous relationships to move along much faster, sleeping with someone she just met only made her seem like a whore. She would see David again during his time at Embers and she could always wait.
