"Sev... can you control where your portals in the upside down open to?"
Sev paused and looked at Grey blankly. "I just open the portals to the Upside down. Not sure where it goes to." Sev thought about it for a while and said. "I think I can open portals from the upside down and I don't know where I end up as well."
Sev suddenly had a feeling that someone was watching over him. Something evil, something dark and it was close by.
Bob saw everyone tensing up and drew his gun. Looking around, he saw 4 armed humanoid leaping at him. Bob staggered backwards and fired a shot before falling and the creature grabbed his arms and continued to punch him. Bob rolled and but was disarmed and the creature was about to grab Bob's gun but Bob rolled and forced it over to the side and the creature decided to grab Bob's hand and strangle him at the same time.
Hit with adrenaline, Grey lept forward, snatching Bob's gun. With inhuman speed and precision, he fired four shots, two hitting each of the creatures eyes. There was a spray of black blood and a roar from the creature.
Within the same few seconds of shooting, Grey slammed hard into the beast's side. There wasn't any extraordinary power behind it, but it was enough to knock it over, and off of Bob. The monster swiped at him blindly with its many arms, but Grey dodged around them like a flitting leaf in the wind, getting up in the monster's personal space. He drew back his hand, flexing his fingers, navy flames forming five torch claws hot enough to slice through steel. He slashed at the monster's neck.
The creature fell back with a thud, it's head barely attached, leaving Grey standing and panting. The fight hadn't taken more than fifteen seconds. Grey looked at his claws, both impressed and worried by them and put them out. His heart was racing. He didn't quite feel like he was in danger of turning, but he felt light headed.
This was the kind of thing he was supposed to be able to do. This was what he was technically designed for, but being so unstable made it dangerous to try. He didn't want to use it either way. He didn't want to be what he was made to be.
Grey sank to his knees, catching his breath. He could feel a headache.
Sev saw the 4 armed humanoid attack Bob and Grey started attacking the creature as well. However, Sev felt the presence of another creature. The creature appeared and leaped towards Grey and Sev focused and a portal opened in the part of the creature and it fell through the portal into the upside down.
Sev saw that Grey already took care of the other creature when he turned around. Sev moved over to Bob to check if he was ok and went over to Grey who was on his knees. "Are you okay?" Sev asked.
"Just tired," said Grey. "Out of practice... Out of shape." He could feel that this particular ability had sort of just unlocked. Somewhere in his mess of a memory, he knew he'd done it before. He could feel the state he was in. He was weak and he needed to 'eat' soon, but he had access to more of his abilities than usual. He had a bit more room to stretch without turning, but he still had to be careful.
He knew he used to already be able to do this and much more, but that was before his little existential crisis a year or so ago.
Bob was choking and gasping for air and he saw Sev walking over and when he turned around he saw the monster dead and Grey kneeling on the ground. "What the hell was that?" Bob shouted and coughed. Bob laid there for a bit and got up and picked up his gun.
"We need to go. This place is not safe." Bob said and went to the cabin to pack up his weapons and place in the trunk of the car. "We bring the fight to them..."
Grey stood, swaying slightly. He reasoned that the perfect time to attack would never come. Now was as good a time as ever. "Let's do it."
"Are we going to actually have any sort of plan or are we just going to roll with the punches? I'd want to go for stealth and the element of surprise, but it's clear that Orcus can sense where we are..." Grey was in the passenger seat, talking as the pulled away from the cabin. "Sev, what do you know he can do? Can he teleport? Can he... make stuff float? Anything like that?"
"Orcus controls everything." Sev said. "The black ooze in the upside down can revive the dead and they become stronger and faster, but Orcus controls them. Orcus is also very tough and strong and could kill other bigger things in the upside down."
Twelve woke up and walked into a power plant. She saw 2 guards at the gates and gestured at the guards and the guards felt a force crushing them and as Twelve clenched her fists, the guards were crushed by an invisible force into a ball. The gate was ripped opened and Twelve proceeded to the power station destroying everything in her path. The workers were surprised to see Twelve and she simply gestured at them and shoved them aside into the wall crushing their bones.
With her abilities, Twelve took down the power station and the city grid and power went down.
Bob prepared everything and got everyone to the car and left. His bruises still hurt but it was not too bad. Grey and Sev seemed fine. Bob drove down to get gas at the gas station and bought a case of bottled water and some snacks. "So, Sev, where do we go now?" Bob asked. "Anyone hungry? There is a diner just down the road, we can go and plan... I have a map in the car."
"The gas station seems fine..." Bob said. "That guy seems normal. How dangerous are things? Is everyone coming for us?" Bob was not sure the extent of the problem, but he has supplies in the car and was prepared. Bob drove outside a small diner which looked rather quiet and he points inside. "We could try, just see how we feel, if its ok, we eat there, otherwise, we walk..."
Sev was about to enter the diner and all the lights outside were turning off one by one. Initially, Sev wanted to sense anything from the upside down, but there was none. "I guess we are not eating in there..." Sev said as the diner looked all dark as well. "The sky is so different." Sev said as he looked at the night sky. All the stars were visible and this was the first time Sev saw the Milky Way.
